After the Girls from Rodarte chatted up long time supporter Natalie Portman they spoke with Aveda about the inspirations behind their latest look:

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?
“Kate, Laura, and I wanted to create a hair look with a dreamy, almost childlike feeling. From the front, the hair looks like it is left down, but in back, it is controlled, adorned with metal flowers that look like barrettes. There’s also a Mexican influence on the look, since the Rodarte collection this season is inspired by bordertowns. We wanted to reflect this inspiration with the vintage flower ornaments and shiny, side-parted hair.” –Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?
“Our collection this season explores the idea of sleepwalking. The idea of a dream state, or an in-between state, inspired us.” —Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte

Q: You have made a real effort to “green” your show this season. How do you feel about this accomplishment?
“Laura and I are committed to protecting the environment. Our greatest inspiration comes from the natural landscape that we grew up in, so we are proud to be partnering with a company like Aveda that promotes environmental awareness and responsibility.” —Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte

Jason Wu Goes Fiercely Green

Jason Wu partnered with Aveda and Odile Gilbert this season to created a truly original organic look. The video below reveals the truly brilliant marriage of chic sophistication and elegant edgy-ness bound up within those crisp black ribbons. Interview questions with Jason are also below.

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?

“Contemporary artist, Tara Donovan’s, installations were my creative starting point; she makes amazing displays out of plastic cups, clear tape, and all sorts of everyday materials. Her art makes me rethink the way I look at texture and materiality.”


Q: You have made a real effort to “green” your show this season. How do you feel about this accomplishment?

“The entire eco movement is something I’ve always had an interest in, so now it is time to take an active role in ‘greening’ the fashion industry. I think the recycled paper invitations we sent out this season was a great beginning, and partnering with an environmentally conscious company like Aveda makes a powerful statement as well.”

Ponytails Trot the Runway at Michael Angel

Ponytails of all kinds - messy, chic, and properly primped - are showing up all over the runways of SS10. Thomas Dunkin was the key artist for Sebastian Professional's stylist design team at the Spring ’10 Michael Angel show and he created a muted ‘perfect pony’ to complement Michael Angel’s bold spring ’10 collection.

Taking inspiration from influential women like Nancy Cunard, Josephine Baker and Schiaparelli, Michael directed a Spring ’10 beauty look that’s meant to replace depressing, dark days of yore with a revived, empowered and reenergized youthfulness. A fresh, healthy “just come back from holiday” look subtly complements the collection’s energy-packed, color-rich designs that are Michael's hallmark.

New York Fashion Week: Sebastian Professional's Faux Bob at Costello Tagliapietra

I'm dying over Costello Tagliapietra's frocks that debuted yesterday at New York Fashion Week. Famed designers, Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra presented Costello Tagliapietra Spring ’10 line last night at Milk Studios in Chelsea and (in a moment of genius) partnered with Sebastian Professional for a killer combination: the next direction in fashion and a shadow of beauty from the past.

DYING, though I'm not sure I could picture them with out these wistful, dreamy faux-bobs. Costello Tagliapietra’s Spring ’10 beauty look seamless combines elegance, youthfulness, natural beauty and romance. The hair, both feminine and fresh, is loosely inspired by the roll style of the ‘40s with soft curls that sit just above the shoulder.

The Hair Look:
Sebastian Professional lead stylist Thomas Dunkin recommends building texture and shape with techniques that keep the hair looking soft, romantic and not too “done.” Finish with an elastic touchable texturizer or flexible shine spray to create an elegant yet playful look.

DIY:

1) Apply Sebastian Professional Texturizer to damp hair; distribute evenly throughout.

2) Blow hair out straight with a medium to large-sized round brush.

3) Spray hair with a flexible hairspray for added texture, section hair, curl it with a medium-sized barrel curling iron and set.

4) Take out pins, gently brush out the curls and then roll hair under, section by section, fastening it under at the neck with bobby pins.

5) Apply Microweb Fiber to hands and gently work through the front of the hair to create an imperfect, lived-in effect. Finish by misting with a strong-hold hairspray.

Fashion Week Report: John Patrick Organic Show Hair by Aveda

I am completely adoring the look created by Odile Gilbert for Aveda at the John Patrick Organic
show. The modern, playful take on Bohemian-chic is absolutely worthy of my first fashion week post of SS10. Hair is smooth and shiny on top with soft, free-flowing curls below the cheekbone and volume at the front—pulled back into a barrette, adding a girly touch.

Here is what Odile had to say about his beautiful follicular creations:

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?
“I call this chic-bohemian look ‘the wave.’ Patrick was inspired by a photograph taken in the Krazy Kat Club in the 1920’s, where the girls embodied a “wholesome Bohemia” full of enthusiasm and creative spirit. We worked together to translate this inspiration into a look for the seductive, modern girl who attends private speakeasies. She is distinctive, intellectual, and very pretty—yet fun-loving and young.”

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
“This look is gorgeous and easy to recreate for day or evening. Prep hair with Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam and create a deep side part. Spray hair with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray and curl with a one-inch barrel curling iron. Brush through to create soft, full waves. Smooth the top of hair with Aveda Light Elements™ Shaping Wax to tame flyaways and achieve a smooth, modern finish. Lastly, twist the front curl back and secure with a barrette, adding Air Control™ Hair Spray for volume and hold.”

Catherine Malandrino's Escapism at Fashion Week

While the beauty look at the Catherine Malandrino Fall 2009 fashion show isn’t what you’d want to whip up for a Saturday night, the inspiration behind it is, well, inspirational.

“Her clothes this season are based on the Surrealist movement,” explains makeup artist Tom Pecheux. It was an era of escapism, fantasy, optimism, newness and the unexpected, and while we are all caught up in our own economic meltdown, this show was about escaping to a more beautiful, fantasy place.

“The makeup is a modern interpretation of the optical effects of a Man Ray photograph,” says Pecheux who used MAC cosmetics.

The liner isn’t on her lashlines, but in her crease, giving her eye a different dimension. Her hair was also otherworldly. “I colored 90 extensions to create this unexpected mix of hair colors. For blondes, I used shades of platinum, champagne, mint and lavender.



“For brunettes, I mixed a cool violet with warm caramel,” says hair colorist Eva Scrivo who worked with Wella haircolor. Hairstylist Odile Gilbert created a chignon that could reside at the MOMA. “It’s almost modern art, a very abstract chignon. The fishnet gives it a bit of mystery and the shape is sort of like a hat, but its hair,” she says. Frederic Fekkai Partners With Dennis Basso for Truely DIY-Friendly Hair

Andre Rodman, lead stylist for Frédéric Fekkai was inspired by a young Carine Roitfeld – sophisticated and confident, yet care free - at the Dennis Basso show this year. Rodman created easy, messy, sexy waves using the Fekkai Full Volume Mousse.

“I wanted to give the hair some guts” Rodman said. The look is easily mimicked at home. Rodman created a center part and then scrunched the hair dry with a diffuser. He took a curling iron, 1 ½ inch round to curl the hair. He then added the Fekkai Coiff™ Nonchalant Piecing & Forming Wax to add texture to the hair, and completed the look with the Fekkai Au Natural Dry Shampoo to create a matte finish.

Stephanie Flor's Bold Eyes at Geren Ford

Makeup artist extraordinaire Stephanie Flor used OCC Cosmetics Makeup to create the look at Geren Ford's FW09 presentation. (Check out these AMAZING photos from the Milk Studios location at WWD) Stephanie generously divulged all the details on how she created this bold look and a DIY below!

"The makeup was very smoked out on the lid. We wanted to add depth and inner darkness to the flawless face. Using airbrush foundation we were able to achieve the most natural coat which gave us the freedom to focus on the eyes and create a seduction of blending the blacks. The lips were nude in color and the eyebrows were concealed with a lighter foundation using a brow brush. Cheeks were left natural with only contour as the separation on the cheeks."

NARS - Soft & Smoky at Thakoon

The clothes at the Fall 2009 Thakoon fashion show were a mix of fanciful and sophisticated, words that also perfectly describe the hair and makeup backstage.

Nars makeup artist Diane Kendal created a look "that felt of ease but that also was a little bit rock 'n roll." Eyes were done using a reddish-brown pencil all around that was then smudged out. Black liner was applied close to the upper and lower lashline and no mascara was used. Brows were dark and thick and skin was made dewy with a light foundation and a coral powder blush on the apples of cheeks. Kendal wanted to keep the focus on the eyes, so lips were muted with lip balm and concealer.

Topping off the look were dreamy and slightly disheveled asymmetric buns. They had a deep, slicked-over side part and a flurry of baby's breath frizzies surrounding the actual bun in back.

Celebrated hairstylist Ted Gibson and makeup artist Vincent Longo created eye catching hair and makeup looks for the models on behalf of Beauty.com.

HAIR – Gibson wanted the hair to look like the models’ had gone out dancing the night before and then woke up the next morning, effortlessly slicking back the sides with gel to create a slightly messy but cool rocker chic style. Ted used Ted Gibson Fix It to gel the sides, and then created texture in the back of the hair with Ted Gibson Tame It. He finished the look off with Beautiful Hold hairspray.

MAKEUP – To contrast the dark and muted hues in Vena Cava's fall collection, Vincent Longo wanted to create a bright eye that popped. For a burst of excitement, he applied a thick orange eye liner followed by a black liner on top to provide depth and definition for the lashes. Then, he thickened and contoured the brows to frame the models' faces, and finished the look with a natural lip. Overall the complexion was matte and porcelain.

NAILS – Nonie mixed up a vibrant hunter green polish which nicely complimented Vena Cava’s fall collection and the bright orange eyes. The shade is called British Racing Green and will launch exclusively on Beauty.com in the fall.

MAC at Nicole Miller!

Eyes were the focus of the beauty look for Nicole Miller. "I wanted to show you can do a colored smokey eye and it can be very wearable and not look weird," says makeup artist James Kaliardos for MAC who chose to work with dreamy shades of blue.

First, Marine Ultra Paint Stick was applied all over the the lid and up into creases. Next, a lighter Freshwater Eye Shadow was placed on the center of the eyelid and under the lashline. Finally, a deep Atlantic Blue Eye Shadow was swept in crease for depth.

"Nicole Miller's show has an 80's vibe, so we could have gone heavier on the cheeks and lips, but for the look to be modern, we kept it simple," explained Kaliardos. The skin was warmed up with the Hello Kitty MAC Tahitian Sun Pressed Powder. Cheekbones were defined with a taupe contouring blush and lips looked healthy and natural thanks to Lilicent Blushcreme, a warm peachy hue. Exploding Ponytails @ Herve Leger

For anyone who ever thought ponytails are dull and drab, this hairstyle at the Herve Leger Fall 2009 Fashion Show will prove you wrong. "This look is very sleek and polished in front, but in back the ponytail is full of incredible volume. It's almost like it is exploding," explains lead hairstylist Dennis Lanni for Bumble and bumble.

To create this amazing body, he pulled hair back then secured in a ponytail. Then he rolled small sections of the ponytail up into figure 8 shapes, securing them with a small elastic. Next, he crimped each one by squeezing it with a flat iron. Once cool, he undid the figure 8's, lightly brushed out and then teased all over for full volume. HOT!

Beauty.com's Tina Turnbow Uses Tarte at Abaete

Think 18th Century France - regal, rebellious, and rich designs paired with a soft, feminine touch...the look for Abaete's Fall 2009 collection as created by Tina Turnbow with Tarte started with fresh skin. Caudalie's beauty elixir and lip conditioner hydrated skin prior to makeup application. The makeup was natural, no makeup-makeup. Tarte's ReCreate gave even color and coverage to the face. Brows were softened by wax from the toolbox brow kit and topped by provocateur mineral powder. Liquid Sunshine added a hint of shine on the lids, rejuvalash defined lashes, and Blushing Bride cheek stain, applied sparingly, added the slightest hint of color on lips and cheeks.
