I've been wanderlusting all over myself this spring. When I need to add visceral weight to my imaginings I tend, as in all my other needs, to turn to my skin care. This spring I'm headed to the rain forest and Hawaii with my new favorite earth-friendly brand, Alba. Yes I fell for their rain forest face wash several months back but not until the new Hawaiian line landed in my beauty closet did I remember their rain forest moisturizer in there as well. My skin now has the glow of a college student newly returned from months upon months of life-changing globe trotting. Skin-changing globe trotting can be had right in your local whole foods. While Whole Foods is obviously seriously lacking in its ability to fulfill all beauty needs, it's skincare section - specifically it's Alba corner, rocks.

Healthy Hair = Hot Hair: EO

In March of '08 when I walked into my very first celeb stylist appointment (where they invited me to come rather than me begging for their next available in like 2012) the shampoo girl was floored at the vibrant health of my hair. "I've only used EO's organic shampoo for two years," I truthfully told her. Little was I to know, that was the last sulfate-free breath these locks would take for 18 months. In the name of beauty editor duty I happily began testing all kinds of delightful, effective (but not organic) shampoo. Sometime last year my little neighborhood Whole Foods stopped carrying my EO conditioner, thus extinguishing any final attempts at organic hair care.

Meantime, my locks have been unruly and (except for when I visit my new hair boyfriend Neven) unsightly. Alas, my hair nightmare is over. EO has (finally!) redesigned and relaunched their entire look and my hair is building its way back to optimal organic health. After two paraben-free shampoos - no frizz, just happy healthy curls. Even my most oblivious male office mates today inquired "Are you going somewhere after work? You look different." EO. Love.

Organic Product RAVE: Tammy Fender Cleansing Milk

Serums are big right now. I have a herd of them on the top shelf of my etagere begging for my attention. Honestly, they confuse me. So does their popularity. At a time when women are pairing down their beauty budgets, why push serums? Most importantly with cleansers like Tammy Fender's Lavender & Fo-ti Formula No. c-129 cleansing milk on the, why buy anything else at all?

Tammy claims to address one’s physical, emotional and spiritual well being through her highly attentive formulas which combine certified organic, traditional European ingredients as well as Chinese herbs and even some colloidal silver for good measure. Her stance on beauty is rooted in the ancient philosophy of Yin and Yang, the foundations of holistic medicine, whereby Yin pertains to the structure of the cells and Yang relates to the body’s "chi" energy. Sounds like a bunch of new age make-believe, no? NO.

This cleanser is changing my life. I want to savor every drop but to spoil myself I just lathered everything from my belly button up with this gentle milk and let the Clarisonic Body Brush go to town. I feel like a new woman and at the end of this week, that's saying a lot. Also, add a dab to the end of a q-tip and moisten. Even the metallic flecks of Estee Lauder's Bronze Goddess Eye Pencil (which usually hold onto to my eyelids for dear life defeating average makeup removers) can't hold on. Tammy Fender has done with one cleanser what most, serums, makeup removers, toners, and masques can't accomplish individually. No wonder The Breakers finally got ahold of her. Enjoy!

Beauty's Product RAVE: Suki Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser in Lemongrass and Natural Sugar

Who doesn't need industrial strength exfoliants in the winter? Well, technically Sigrid has forbid me from using physical exfoliants on my face until the end of time. ("Gomage only!" Insists the brilliant French-Canadian wizard of epidermal health.) However as we all know my back needs serious help and well she was, at the time, speaking only of my face. Lipstick, To Die For?

Have you ever found a lipstick that was to die for? Did you ever wonder, as it rubbed off on your morning apple, if its ingredients were as nutritious as your breakfast? After reading this New York Magazine tid bit, I began to wonder, are women unknowingly killing themselves for beauty?

LVHM (owner of a long list of beauty companies including Givenchy, Dior, Donna Karen, Benefit, and Guerlain) is currently being sued by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. LVHM is not the only company with toxic ingredients. Sixty-one percent of lipsticks tested exceeded the legally acceptable amount of lead content. LVHM is taking the fall for all of the offenders because their Dior Addict Positive Red Lipstick tested over twice the legal limit for lead content. (To their credit LVHM does a remarkable amount of environmental and social stewardship.)

But let's get real, Lead!?! Are we not past the point in history where lead is still used in well, anything? Here is a list (an 11 page, double-columned list) of beauty companies who, by signing the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, feel we are as society beyond poisoning women through makeup and beauty products.

Personally, I am an organic fanatic but if there is a product that erases wrinkles or makes me look stunning, I will use it - toxic or not. My point is that women, while we may never unilaterally chose health over beauty, should be able to make that decision knowingly. Plenty of educated successful women chose to put toxins in their body on a daily basis, but these are informed choices. Smoking is bad for you, but some days for some people it's what they chose to do. Nowhere on any lipstick I have ever purchased does it say "Contains enough lead to sink a ship."

So what's a girl to do? First, make use of this database of 25,000 beauty products. If you search for your favorite product it will tell you on a scale from 1 to 10 exactly how toxic, carcinogenic, or legally restricted its ingredients are. 10 is the worst rating. L'Oreal's Hydra-Renewal Daily Dry Skin Cream earned this distinction. Intriguingly, not all of the healthiest products are from typically eco-friendly companies. Estee Lauder's Dew Dusting Powder earned an honorable rating of two.

Second, I have added The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and The Database for Safe Cosmetics to the "Links I Love" feature on the side bar. Finally, from now on I will do my best to let you know the ratings of all the products I review. It will be an effort, but in the words of one toxin embroiled brand, You're Worth It.
