Caught Testing: 2013 Dodge Hornet hatchback - Spy Shots

Chrysler is in desperate need of some competitive small cars and Fiat looks ready to help the American automaker fill that gaping hole in its lineup. Based on Fiat’s new C-Evo chassis, this new Dodge midsize sedan/hatchback will be similar in size and shape to the current Alfa Romeo Giulietta—a 5-door hatch that competes with the VW Golf and Ford Focus.
Our spy photographers captured this test mule from nearly every angle. At the front is a pair of high-tech-looking headlamps, visible beneath the front mesh. This car also appears to have a chunkier grille opening than the Alfa—though Dodge officials have previously said the days of the brand’s crosshair grille are numbered. Cast your eyes back and you’ll notice some strange lines running along the center of the car, as well as the rear doors.

This extra sheet metal should make the Dodge noticeably wider and longer than the Giulietta. The rear of this prototype looks well proportioned, with the exception of those peashooter exhausts which look totally out of place in the rear bumper. Kudos for the cool “telephone dial” alloy wheels; long an Alfa trademark, could they add some Italian flair to the Dodge?
Dodge Hornet and Chrysler 100C
Expect Dodge to drop the Caliber name when this car arrives sometime in the middle of 2012. The awkward-looking economy-car/crossover never caught on, so it makes sense to make a fresh start with its replacement. Chrysler is also expected to receive a version of the Fiat/Dodge to slot beneath the 200 sedan. As for names, the Dodge Hornet (used on the brand’s funky little 2006 concept car) and Chrysler 100 seem pretty safe bets.

First Official Photos: 2012 Porsche 911 - First Look

Recent spy shots showed an all-new Porsche 911 in the snow, winter testing. Next came images of the car at the Nürburgring, circuit testing. And now, Porsche has released images of a slightly disguised 2012 Porsche 911 as it was testing in South Africa.
Porsche. Porsche. Porsche. The automotive world seems to be ablaze with all things 991, the internal designation for this new 911. But I guess that’s expected when news about something as iconic as the next-generation 911 breaks. So why would you, the dedicated Roadandtrack.com visitor, give two shakes about a South African appearance? Well, even though Porsche has not released any official details about the car, we have a good idea of what the next 911 will be when it makes its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show in September.

To recap what you may have missed, the 991 retains the strong design cues of the 911. For styling critics who scream “evolve,” here’s our counter: If ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it. The sideview mirrors have been relocated (moved from the corner of the windows to the doors)—a seemingly new Porsche trend also evident on Cayman and Boxster prototypes. As for the headlights and taillights, like those 3-year-old twins with a kicking problem sitting behind you on a domestic flight, try to ignore them—they are merely translucent stickers with printed designs furtively placed as a facade. So are the vents on the rear quarter panels.
Here is where things get a bit more prophetic. The new 911 has grown, definitively. From what we’ve heard, the 991 is 2.2 in. longer than the outgoing 997, but gains favorable dimensions by means of a longer wheelbase (4 in.), shorter overhangs (1.3 in. front, 0.5 in. rear) and a lower roofline (0.5 in.). The base of the A-pillars has moved forward by 1.4 in. for a sharper windshield rake, but the coefficient of drag remains the same, at 0.29. While bigger usually means heavier, the new 911, thanks to increased use of high-strength steel, is said to be lighter than the previous model. Early figures have the 991 weighing 55 lb less than the 997.
The base engine for the new 2012 Porsche 911 is purportedly a direct-injected 3.4-liter flat-6 with 350 bhp, similar to the one found in the Boxster S. A trim level up, the Carrera S is said to come equipped with a direct-injected 3.8-liter flat-6 pumping out 400 bhp. Improvements to fuel efficiency are certain for either engine. Juicier still are rumors about a new transmission for the 991: a 7-speed manual. That’s right, seven glorious gears to physically shift through. Bless Porsche and their clutch-loving hearts. Look for the 7-speed dual-clutch PDK to return.

If that isn’t brain-whetting enough, several sources have stated that the next-gen 911 will utilize the KERS hybrid system. Derived from Porsche’s 24-hour endurance race efforts, the Kinetic Energy Recover System stores energy from braking and converts it to additional on-demand power via a flywheel. Think of the efficiency gains found on a Prius, but used instead for fun (i.e. extra performance). If you’re concerned any additional horsepower gain will be washed away by the net increase in weight, don’t fret. With the use of aluminum and high-strength steel, the forthcoming hybrid model is reported to be lighter as well. If you’re planning to purchase the 911 hybrid, prepare to wait: a KERS-equipped 911 won’t make it to showrooms until perhaps 2015.

2012 VW Beetle feature Gallery

If you think the 2012 VW Beetle looks like the old Beetle, well, you’d be right: from Super Beetles to New Beetles and Ragster concepts, this newest version of the automotive icon is inspired by a 73-year history. But make no mistake: 2012 ushers in a Beetle full of today’s key automotive features and technology, from three engine choices to Keyless Entry, an available panoramic sunroof, Fender Premium Audio and more. So yes – the aggressive style, the retro lines and planted look will get your attention.  But it’s the car that will make you want to drive. And drive.
Sporty. Dynamic. Bold. Since its debut at the 2011 New York International Auto Show, those have been just a few of the words used to describe the newly redesigned 2012 VW Beetle. Arriving here, however, at this new interpretation of a classic icon, is a story about drawing inspiration from the original Beetle and translating its unique style in a modern way. To do that, Volkswagen Brand Design Chief, Klaus Bischoff and team eschewed the design geometry defined by three semi-circles (front wing, rear wing, domed roof above it), gave the car a lower profile, a longer hood and a steeper front windshield. They also stretched the Beetle 3.3 inches wider and 6 inches longer, creating a more sporting, powerful appearance.

Another key to the design of the new 2012 VW Beetle is the rear spoiler, integrated into the design of the car with a black top and a body color under side. What that spoiler also hints at is the Beetle’s performance: the 2.0L TSI® turbocharged gasoline engine, pictured here, will be offered with a DSG 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. At 200 hp and 207 lb.-ft of torque, the turbo will be the sportiest Beetle offered  – though you’d be hard pressed to say no to the 2012 VW Beetle 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel, thanks to 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft of torque. The TDI Clean Diesel Beetle offers manufacturer estimates of 40 mpg highway, 29 mpg city, and 33 mpg combined. Also available is the 2.5L five cylinder engine, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or optional 6-speed automatic. The five cylinder engine produces 170 hp and 177 lb.-ft of torque.
A quick glance at the styling of the back of the 2012 VW Beetle reveals its connection to Beetle heritage. This is, however, unmistakably a Beetle for today with dual exhaust, 19-inch wheels and available features such as a panoramic roof, keyless entry and personalization options such as colors, wraps and an annual theme model.

Inside, Beetle heritage cues continue with available painted or carbon-look dashboards, an additional glove box integrated into the dash and optional gauges (oil temperature, clock with stopwatch function and boost pressure gauge) located above the entertainment system. There’s also a split-folding rear seat.

Driving this newest Beetle is a decidedly modern experience, and one designed for drivers, from its engine choices and available 19-inch wheels to details such as an instrument panel arranged directly in front of the driver (tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge) that provides all key information at a glance. The steering wheel is specially designed with optional painted accents in the spokes depending on the equipment line. Framed by two air vents, the selected audio/navigation system is optimally located in the driver’s visual field on the dashboard. Within easy reach, climate controls are situated just below.

Key premium features available on the 2012 VW Beetle include the Fender Premium Audio System, which adds an additional subwoofer and 400 watts of output power along with proprietary Panasonic® speaker technology that covers the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers and front dual voice coil speakers. Those choosing this sound system also receive adjustable interior ambiance lighting.

Hot News: Mitsubishi Lancer Evo XI Goes Hybrid

You may have heard rumors the next generation Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution will be an electric car. Well, they're true. But before you start writing angry rants in the comments box, read on. According to one source inside Mitsubishi, the Evolution XI, due in 2013, will be the best Evo yet.

To be built off the same platform as the chunky PX-MiEV plug-in hybrid off-roader concept Mitsubishi revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show last October, the Evolution XI will benefit from the company's latest electric/hybrid technology. The new Evo's 2.0 litre MIVEC petrol engine, borrowed from the current Japan-spec Galant, will be mated to a new plug-in hybrid system with lithium-ion batteries. But here's the twist: the Evo's main power source will not be the gas engine, but an electric motor that will drive the front wheels. The 2.0 litre engine, when needed, will drive the rear wheels.

The Evo XI will give drivers the option of driving in EV mode, though only for short distances, improving fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions. But it won't be a namby-pamby eco-warrior. According to our source, the electric motor will be an upgraded version of the 63 hp permanent magnet synchronous motor used in the i-MiEV, and the 2.0 litre MIVEC gas engine is expected to generate around 320 hp. Depending on how Mitsubishi manages the power flow between the two, the Evo XI could effectively have up to 350 hp on tap. The current Evo makes do with a mere 291 hp.

Our insider suggests Mitsubishi engineers are working toward a target 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds. "The new electric motor will effectively work like a turbo, only smoother," he says, "so there's no need to worry about power delivery."

What hardcore drivers will be more concerned about are the handling upgrades, which include a couple of hi-tech handling gizmos that were not finished in time for the Evo X, launched two-and-a-half years ago -- Active Steering and Roll Control Suspension. The Evo XI will also feature a new electronically-controlled active yaw control system (E-AYC) that regulates torque distribution between the rear wheels.

We tested an Evo prototype fitted with Active Steering and Roll Control Suspension way back in February 2006 and were impressed. But Mitsubishi Motor's recall problems, restructuring, and a decision to focus development resources on fuel efficient engines and cleaner CO2 emissions, led to these key pieces of Evo techno-wizardry being put on the backburner. We can still recall an engineer sighing at the Evo X's reveal in 2007 as he whispered: "This is not the finished product, you know."

Our sketches give one artist's impression of how the new Evo XI might look. Whatever the final design, this much is clear: Mitsubishi is determined to totally re-invent one of the world's great performance cars.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo XI - New and Future Cars

If there is to be another Evo, it will probably have some sort of hybrid option, which is an infinitely better scenario than having no Evo at all.

With the launch of the Outlander Sport compact crossover as well as the electric i-MiEV, it seems Mitsubishi Motors is intent on adopting a green image. Word from Japan is that the company is slowly scrapping its sporty-car program in favor of more economical products.
The company’s in-house tuner, Ralliart, has been all but shut down, while plans for the next-generation Lancer Evolution have allegedly been put on hold. However, an inside source tells us that death reports of the next-generation Evo are premature. He informed us that there are still a few people within Mitsubishi who don’t want to see the company’s image car go away, and that development is underway on a plug-in hybrid version of the high-performance sports sedan.
“This way, it will conform to the company’s overall strategic plan of building fuel-efficient cars,” he says. “Yet it will have all the performance that the current Lancer Evo possesses.”
Although nothing is set in stone, it seems that at this point if there is to be another Evo, it will probably have some sort of hybrid option, which is an infinitely better scenario than having no Evo at all. And from what we’ve been told, the new car won’t be a slouch at the test track, either.

The Top 10 Most Fuel-Efficient 2011 SUVs

For those of us who want a sport utility vehicle—to haul the kids, groceries and make it up that steep gravel driveway—but don't want the high monthly bills from the gas station, this is the list for you. Here are the top 10 most fuel efficient 2011 SUVs.

2011 Toyota RAV4 2WD

Base Price: $21,925

The Numbers (MPG): 28 hwy, 22 city, 24 overall

The Tradeoff: Toyota's ever-popular RAV4 made it into last place on this top-ten list by just barely beating out its old nemesis, the Honda CR-V. Needless to say, the upcoming all-electric version may hold quite a different position next time.

2011 Subaru Outback Wagon 4WD

Base Price: $23,195

The Numbers (MPG): 29 hwy, 22 city, 24 overall

The Tradeoff: When we reviewed the Outback last year, we were impressed enough to name it our Most Versatile Car. While not a tall, truck-based SUV like some of its competition, it still handled itself quite capably on rough terrain, thanks in part to Subaru's extensive experience with all-wheel-drive tech.

2011 Kia Sportage 2WD

Base Price: $18,295

The Numbers (MPG): 31 hwy, 22 city, 25 overall

The Tradeoff: During our recent test of the 2011 Sportage, we found that Kia has managed to improve every aspect of its small SUV, and while it was not exactly luxurious, we were pleased with the lighter, more responsive chassis, along with a boost in power and more available options. It represents a competent package for a competitive price, exactly as Kia intended.

2011 Jeep Patriot 2WD

Base Price: $15,995

The Numbers (MPG): 29 hwy, 23 city, 25 overall

The Tradeoff: Identical in fuel economy to the Jeep Compass, the four-door Jeep looks and plays the part of a proper Jeep well enough, although its more comfortable platform (shared with the Dodge Caliber) isn't quite as rugged as Jeep's other offerings.

2011 Chevrolet Equinox FWD (GMC Terrain)

Base Price: $22,745 ($24,250)

The Numbers (MPG): 32 hwy, 22 city, 26 overall

The Tradeoff: Last year we had a chance to sample the Equinox, and we came away fairly unimpressed with the overall driving experience, particularly with the relative ease that the four-cylinder engine had in getting the fairly heavy vehicle up to speed. And it's a substantially improved vehicle over its previous version.

2011 Hyundai Tucson 2WD

Base Price: $18,745

The Numbers (MPG): 31 hwy, 23 city, 26 overall

The Tradeoff: Hyundai vehicles are improving rapidly and substantially. The Tucson fits right in the current stable of small SUVs—it has no fatal flaws and is a comfortable, well-made vehicle.

2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2WD

Base Price: $18,495

The Numbers (MPG): 31 hwy, 25 city, 27 overall

The Tradeoff: The Outlander Sport is the most economical nonhybrid SUV here (its big brother the Outlander isn't far off, either), and we found it to offer good value and a surprisingly decent ride, although there was no hiding the lack of power compared to its competition.

2011 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4WD

Base Price: $37,290

The Numbers (MPG): 28 hwy, 28 city, 28 overall

The Tradeoff: As would be expected, the top three fuel misers are all hybrids, starting with the Toyota Highlander. Interestingly, the 2011 Highlander Hybrid achieves the very same 28 mpg in the city as when cruising down the highway. We had a Highlander Hybrid as a long-term tester a few years back and were sad to see it go; it was as trouble-free as we could've hoped.

2011 Lexus RX 450h

Base Price: $43,235

The Numbers (MPG): 32 hwy, 28 city, 30 overall

The Tradeoff: The only true luxury vehicle on the list, the Lexus RX 450h offers great gas mileage and a smooth, quiet ride. When we last reviewed it, we immediately appreciated the understated appearance and lack of bling appeal, especially considering the seemingly endless list of features on this vehicle.

2011 Ford Escape Hybrid FWD

Base Price: $29,935

The Numbers (MPG): 34 hwy, 31 city, 32 overall

The Tradeoff: The Ford Escape Hybrid (along with corporate cousins the Mazda Tribute and the soon-to-die Mercury Mariner), takes top honors for SUV fuel economy. In front-wheel-drive trim, it serves up well over 30 mpg in all situations, as well as plenty of style and substance.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

OFF-ROAD ABILITY
Base Price: $30,215

No brand is more deeply rooted in off-road adventure than Jeep. The new Grand Cherokee stands at the top of the lineup with not only a much more luxurious and roomy interior but also more power and, yes, enhanced on- and off-road chops. The new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 churns out 290 hp and 260 lb ft of torque, delivers 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway and will tow 5000 pounds. But we’d choose the 360-hp V8 for its muscle-car hustle—and take the modest fuel-economy hit. For the first time, the unibody Jeep uses a four-wheel independent suspension for enhanced steering and suspension precision. Opt for the Quadra-Lift air suspension, and the Jeep will provide five distinct suspension-height levels, with up to an impressive 10.7 inches of ground clearance. During a snow-covered sortie in Moab, Utah, the Jeep rocked and rolled its way over the worst obstacles, taking the most challenging lines without so much as a whimper. Best of all, the Grand Cherokee can lower itself back down and provide a pillow-soft luxury-car ride on the way home from the trailhead.

2011 Lotus Evora

FUN TO DRIVE
Base Price: $74,675

What does Lotus know about handling that eludes the rest of the world? It's a question we asked ourselves after an exhilarating mountain-road romp in the new Evora. While this Lotus makes several concessions to practicality, such as a small rear seat and even cruise control, essentially it's a driver's car. And for 2011, there's nothing better on the road. Those with the means will enjoy a connection between the car and the road that borders on telepathic. The steering effort linearly increases as the cornering forces build, and the suspension impeccably keeps the tires squarely planted on the road. The result is a car with high but accessible cornering limits, a sports car that makes even novice drivers feel like heroes. Even better, the Evora smashes the notion that good handling and a supple ride are mutually exclusive—it's cushy enough to drive to work, yet incredibly entertaining on curvy roads and racetracks.

2011 Hyundai Sonata

VALUE
Base Price: $19,195

In pro sports, the Most Valuable Player trophy doesn't always go to the player with the best stats; sometimes, intangibles add up to an obvious MVP. Similarly, the Hyundai Sonata was a clear choice for the 2011 PMV—Popular Mechanics's Value—award. What Hyundai has achieved with the redesign of its bread-and-butter sedan is, in a word, astonishing. One glance tells much of the story, as the vehicle looks more like a luxury coupe than a midsize economy sedan. Gone is the V6, replaced with a 200-hp four-cylinder. Or opt for a turbocharged four-banger with 274 hp, which makes you forget about the lack of a V6 in the lineup. There's even a hybrid model that gets over 30 mpg. Options aside, the Sonata's standard safety equipment includes electronic stability control (ESC), traction control and antilock brakes with brake assist. Throw in Hyundai's 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty and it makes you wonder what luxury carmakers will have to do to keep calling themselves luxury carmakers.

2011 Toyota Sienna

VERSATILITY
Base Price: $25,270

While minivans are often passed over in favor of crossovers and SUVs, no vehicle is more versatile. Witness the new Toyota Sienna. It's 5 inches shorter than the Toyota Sequoia, yet the Sienna offers 39.1 cubic feet of cargo room behind the third-row seat, 20.2 more than the sport ute. Furthermore, the Sienna's seats adapt to a variety of configurations. The split third row folds flat into the recessed cargo area, and the second row—either singular buckets or a split bench— slides fore and aft and also folds. For 2011, Toyota offers a 2.7-liter four-cylinder and a six-speed automatic that return up to 24 mpg. The company has also aggressively restyled the van in an attempt to drop some of the mommy-mobile stigma. Need more proof that the Sienna can do it all? It tows up to 3500 pounds and is the only minivan that's available with all-wheel drive.

2011 Ford Mustang

PERFORMANCE
Base Price: $22,145

Last year, we picked the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 as the best performance car, and we didn't expect to bestow the honor on the original ponycar again for quite some time. After all, the performance category is brimming with dynamic-handling, powerfully motivated competitors from around the globe—the BMW M3 and the Chevrolet Corvette were recent winners—and they're all improving, all the time. But over the course of the past few months, Ford has re energized the entire Mustang lineup. First, the new GT arrived with an astonishingly versatile V6 engine that developed 305 hp while attaining more than 30 mpg. Alongside that entry-level engine, we witnessed the rebirth of the 5.0, a nostalgic number that represents high performance—by virtue of its 412 hp—like none other. Except, perhaps, for the 302. Ford reincarnated the Boss 302 nameplate for 2011 as a naturally aspirated 440-hp race car you can drive to the racetrack. You can manually tune the adjustable shocks to their hardest settings, win the race, and then revert to the softer street settings and drive home. Finally, the 2011 Shelby GT500 still sits at the extreme side of the spectrum, featuring a new, lighter aluminum block for its supercharged 5.4-liter V8 (which makes 550 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque). Race ya' for pinks?

2011 Ford F-250 Super Duty
WORKHORSE
Base Price: $28,020

When there's a heavy load to move—and move quickly— few vehicles will do it better than Ford's new Super Duty pickups. The heart of a truck is its powerplant, and the top choice for these rigs is the new 6.7-liter diesel V8 that cranks out 400 hp and a pavement wrinkling 800 lb-ft of torque. That's more grunt than any other pickup or passenger vehicle sold in North America. Indeed, an F-350 dually can handle over 7000 pounds in its bed and tow more than 22,000 pounds with a fifth-wheel hitch. When the road gets muddy, there's a solid axle at each end of a 4WD Super Duty's chassis—and an optional electronic locking rear differential to split power equally to the rear wheels. The new Super Duty is exceedingly capable on the job site, but it was the truck's docile road manners that helped it win our heavy-duty pickup truck comparison test (Nov. '10). For 2011, the suspension was reconfigured to use fewer leaf springs in the back, which helps these massive trucks soak up the bumps like an F-150, and the light steering effort eases trailer backups. The Super Duty continues Ford's use of pioneering and smart options, like power-extendable towing mirrors, flip-up rear seats and an innovative productivity screen, that make the dirtiest jobs seem almost, well, fun.

2011 Ford Fiesta

FUEL EFFICIENCY
Base Price: $13,320

Just about anybody can make a car fuel efficient with the aid of an electric motor, a generator or two and a few hundred lithium batteries. But it takes some real skill to achieve up to 40 mpg—and a 400-mile range—from a good ol'-fashioned internal combustion engine. Not that the Ford Fiesta is exactly old-fashioned. After all, it comes with a dual-clutch transmission and electric power-assisted steering, and its 1.6-liter 16-valve four-cylinder Duratec generates 120 hp with the help of variable-cam timing. In the interest of full disclosure, however, the really remarkable mileage figure is achieved when customers elect to ditch the five-speed manual transmission and spend another $1070 to pair the engine to the optional PowerShift, a six-speed dual-clutch automatic that boosts the car's EPA mileage ratings to 29 mpg city/40 mpg highway. The dual clutch gearbox is a technology that emerged on the $1 million Bugatti Veyron in 2005, then gradually made its way into sporty cars from Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Nissan, Porsche and the like for its responsiveness and seamless gear changes. This is its first appearance in the subcompact sedan and hatchback market. Because there is no fancy hybrid or electric tech to finance, the payoff is immediate: The dual-clutch Fiesta costs thousands less than a Honda Insight or Toyota Prius.

2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe

DESIGN
Base Price: $38,165

It would have been less complicated for General Motors to do what car companies usually do when introducing new vehicles to the buying public: trot out a stunningly beautiful concept at an auto show, only to tone down the production version before it makes its way to market. It's the old design-to-reality bait-andswitch. The production version of the CTS Coupe gives Cadillac's “Art and Science” design language a refined accent—the edges are still there, but they're tempered with curves that convey a handcrafted look. Of course, the CTS Coupe owes much of its design to the CTS Sedan, including the entirety of its bold front end. Unlike the sedan, however, the Coupe's profile is perhaps its best angle—with a swept windshield, blacked-out B-pillars and nearly horizontal rear glass that breathes new life into what is usually a banal perspective. Note the lack of exposed door handles, the center-mounted exhaust and the upright taillights that hark back to Cadillac's tail fins from 1948. Now drool.

Infiniti M37/M56

LUXURY
Base Price: $47,125

Every rear-drive Infiniti since the original 2003 G35 has been exceptionally fun to drive— and to its rivals, a formidable competitor. But in terms of polish, the company's cars have lagged behind Europeans. No more. Inside and out, the 2011 Infiniti M could set new benchmarks for design. The sedan retains the taut handling of past models, but thanks to a suspension reboot, it now moves with more finesse. The M also boasts smart technology such as Lane Departure Prevention— which activates the brakes to keep the M in its lane—and the Eco Pedal, an accelerator that resists throttle jabs, reminding the driver how to save fuel. The M37's potent 3.7-liter V6 brings 330 hp, and Infiniti's new 420-hp 5.6-liter V8 is a powerhouse. Next year, the M Hybrid will be about 25 percent more efficient than the current M37—and deliver 40 more lb-ft of torque than the M56.

2011 Chevrolet Volt

TECHNICAL INNOVATION
Base Price: $41,000

After more than 300 miles behind the wheel of GM's technical marvel, we remain impressed. GM reps call the Volt an EV with a range extender because its prime motivation comes from a 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that users can charge from an outlet before driving. Once the battery is depleted, a 1.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine spins a generator so drivers never have to worry about being stranded with a flat battery. In practice, the Volt hides its high-tech underpinnings in a refined, smooth and practical everyday machine that's unlike anything else on the road. With a charged battery, the only sounds the car makes are faint electronic hums and buzzes and hushed tire noise. The backup engine fires with a barely perceptible shudder and only gets raucous during hard driving. While GM claims the Volt can travel up to 40 miles on a fully charged battery, we never got farther than 35 before the engine fired. Once the battery was discharged, the Volt returned 31.72 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway—decent but far from stellar results. But as GM works on Volt 2.0, surely those figures will improve. More to the point, it represents a dramatic re-engineering of the automobile that will change the way people think about electric cars.

Supercharged, supersized, and superbad, the ZL1 will be the best performing Camaro ever produced when it debuts later this year. A version of the Corvette's blown V8 produces about 550 horsepower and channels the torque through a six-speed manual gearbox. Chassis upgrades include 14-inch front brake rotors, 6-piston calipers, and GM's MR adjustable shocks. Inside, the the base Camaro's awkwardly shaped steering wheel and shifter have been replaced with more ergonomic alcantara-covered pieces. An aluminum hood with carbon-fiber bulge shaves some weight, but expect the ZL1 to still come in around 4000 pounds. The price has not yet been determined, but 50 grand seems a good guess.

Chevy says the supercharged engine will produce about 550 horsepower, but don't be surprised if that number creeps closer to 600 when the car debuts later this year.

Rhys Millen Hyundai Velostar RallyCross Car

As Hyundai prepares to launch its new coupe, the Velostar, the company has teamed up with Rhys Millen to run the new car in the U.S. Rally Cross Series. While the standard car isn't especially powerful (138 hp), the race car ups that considerably to 500.

Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec

By boring the Genesis V8 to 5.0 liters (from 4.6 liters) and adding direct fuel injection, the sporty large sedan will roll with 429 horsepower—43 more than the standard car. Perhaps most impressively, the R-Spec should cost less than 50 grand.

The Genesis V8 appears to have plenty of space under the intake manifold to fit a supercharger, a long rumored upgrade that seems unlikely now that the R-Spec will soon arrive

2011 VW Jetta GLI

With a 200-hp turbo engine, sprightly suspension, and unique trim, the Jetta GLI promises to be a sedan version of the GTI hatchback, which is one of our favorite driver's car.

Chicago's McCormick Place

Chicago's McCormick Place is such a large hall that there's room for four, small test-drive courses. Here Ford's new Explorer navigates a seesaw course and simulated sand pit.

2011 Dodge Durango R/T

The R/T is Dodge's attempt at a "driver's" SUV. THe formula includes tauter suspension, special trim and a zero exterior chrome. Since the standard Durango already handles quite well, we're curious to see if Dodge can imporve the dynamics without killing the ride.

2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

Like the Challenger 392, the latest Charger uses the enlarged, 6.4-liter Hemi V8. The 465 routes power to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. THe upgraded interior looks terrific and Dodge claims a 175 mph top speed. That's heady stuff for a roughly $45,000 sedan.

2011 Dodge Caravan R/T

Dodge calls it a "Man Van" which is yet another attempt to remove the minivan's mommy-mobile stigma. We know few minivan driver's clamoring for such a thing, but we have to admit that this van's 40-percent stiffer suspension and blacked-out interior would be items we'd appreciate anyway.

2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8

At Chicago, Dodge debuted a new color for the Challenger dubbed, appropriately, green with envy.

2012 Nissan GT-R Black Edition

For the 2012 model year "Godzilla" the nickname for this Japanese supercar, gets an additional 45 horsepower (530 total) and chassis enhancements that improve feel. The car now also comes with an automated launch-control system that catapults the car to 60 mph in about three seconds.

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Black Diamond Edition

Cadillac will build only roughly 500 of these special cars. The signature feature is a metal flake black paint job that positively glows. It also comes with black wheels and yellow calipers. Like we said, it's an acquired taste.

2011 Audi TT RS

Audi never planned to offer the uber TT, the RS, for sale in the U.S. But, we're happy to report, that the 340-hp coupe will soon be available here. Customers can choose between a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Plus there's a launch-control system for flawless automated getaways.

2012 Acura TL

The TL was one of the few all-new cars to debut at Chicago, although at quick glance that's tough to recognize. They've softened the nose somewhat—"it's refined yet aggressive," a company rep said with a straight face. Mechanically, however, much of the car is carryover two version of the V6, 3.5- and 3.7-liter, power either the front or all four wheels.

2011 Mazda MX-5 Special Edition

Mazda's folding hardtop MX-5 now outsells the softtop two to one. This year, the company has added a trim and paint package, dubbed simply "Special Edition." It's basically a fully loaded $30,925 MX-5 with unique body color

2011 Chrysler 200 Convertible

Officially, Chrysler calls this one a concept, but this is basically the 200 convertible that will appear in the next few months. Unlike the last one, which had a folding soft top, the new one features a hardtop that should greatly increase top-up refinement.
